Poker rules are important to know for winning, and poker etiquette. The following poker rules are based on the poker game Texas Hold Em. Texas Hold Em is the most popular poker game played online and in card rooms.

Texas hold em is played with a standard 52 card deck. First thing the dealer will ask when dealing a new game are the blinds. Blinds are used to force action and betting right away. If a table limit is $2/4 the big blind will post $2 and the small blind will post $1 basically the big blind posts the smaller limit of the table and the small blind posts half of that. Next is the dealer button, that is the button that moves around the table and is to the small blinds right. Action always starts to the person immediately after the button (after the flop).

Each player receives two (hole cards) cards face down. After viewing your cards, you can either fold, bet, or raise the hand when betting gets to you.

Then the dealer will burn the top card and deal the next 3 cards from the deck, this is known as "the flop". You will use your 2 hole cards with "the flop" to try and make a 5 card poker hand. The player to the left of the button begins the betting.

Next is fourth street, again the dealer will burn a card and lay down the fourth card. Betting will commence to the left of the button again. All betting starts at the higher limit of the table here, i.e. $2/4 a bet of $4 must be wagered.

Finally 5th street or "the river" no more cards will be dealt after this time, and again the player to the left of the button will start the betting. After all bets are made it is time for the showdown all players left in the hand must show their cards and the highest 5 card poker hand wins the pot. If there is a tie the pot will be split.
