How are poker hands ranked.

Royal Flush - i.e. AKQJ10 spades

Straight Flush - i.e. 45678 hearts
Full House - i.e. KKKJJ
Flush - AQ843 clubs
Straight - KQJ109 any suit
3 of a kind - 444J6
2 pair - QQ557
1 pair - KK395
Highest single card - A48J3

poker hand - royal flushThe most powerful hand is the Royal Flush, it consists of the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 all of the same suit.

Next is the Straight Flush, like the royal flush, they are all the same suite but can be anything other than a royal such as 10,9,8,7,6 of the same suite.

The next most powerful hand is a Full House, or a boat.  A full house consists of 3 of a kind and a pair such as QQQJJ.  The larger of 2 full houses would be decided by the bigger 3 of the kind. A 555KK would lose to a JJJ44 because the jacks are bigger than the fives.

Below the full house, is a flush.  Any combination of suited cards except the straight and royal flush.  An example is KQ973 of clubs.  The highest card determines which flush is bigger between 2 or more flushes, therefore an A9543 would beat a QJ743.  They are not ranked by suits.poker hand - flush

Next is a straight.  A straight is any 5 cards in sequence that are of different suits.  An example of this would be 23456 or KQJ109.  Like the flush, the higher 5 cards would beat out the lower cards.  The ace can play low in most poker hand - straight pokergames such as A2345, also called a "wheel".  AKQJ10 is called "broadway".

The next highest hand is 3 of a kind.  Flopping a "set" would be having a pocket pair such as 33 and the flop would be K3J.  An example of 3 of a kind would be KKKJ10.  The higher 3 of a kind would win if there are more than one 3 of a kinds on the table.poker hand - 3 of a kind, three of a kind, trips, set, poker

2 pair is the next highest hand, an example of this would be 66553.  Again the higher 2 cards of the 2 pair decide who wins.  poker hand - 2 pairTherefore AA552  would beat KK669.

Next is one pair.  AA57J is and example of one pair, and of course the highest pair would win.
